ACHIEVING A POETIC CONCEPTION

ACHIEVING A POETIC CONCEPTION
ARISTOTELIS MAGOULAS | PHYSICAL THEATER

PHYSICAL THEATER
There is not an exact definition for physical theatre. But it could be described as a dramatic body art.

AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION
It can be expressed mainly through: 1. a theatrical play, 2. a performance, 3. through dance

PHYSICAL THEATER ACT VS PERFORMANCE
These two terms that combine. Nevertheless, physical theater is based in particular techniques that have the human body and its dynamics as an axis. The term performance is more broad and might be expressed through a variety of arts (simultaneously or not) without necessarily having the human intervention on stage.

AS A TECHNIQUE
Physical theatre aims to achieve a poetic conception of the human mind and body as well as the absolute unification of nature and all the elements, since all arts are based in nature. Furthermore, it should power all performers with a new way of thinking upon specific techniques, resulting in being able to use wisely and more productively the mechanics of the human body.

AS PART OF EDUCATION FOR AN ACROBAT
It gives reason for existence in every acrobatic movement. Where is this movement coming from? What is the reason behind the action or reaction and which is the motivation? It explores he balances of the soul and teaches techniques that will enrich the range and quality of movements.

THE MIMICRY IN PHYSICAL THEATER
Mimicry is a misunderstood term in Greece. Powerful weapon for performers that take physical theatre, because on one side, they have to deliver the concept of an unreal world on stage. On the other side, mimicry in physical theatre refers to the philosophy of mimicking the exact movement of e.g. animals or the dynamic energy that flows from tangible or intangible items, even from abstract concepts.

FUNDAMENTALS SOMEONE HAS TO KNOW BEFORE ATTENDING
The only thing that someone needs is to be available in order to discover his body dynamics 100%, so that one will be able to use it more efficiently. Everyone is asked to communicate with each other and with each surroundings, extending the horizons of imagination and perception as a person.

SUGGESTIONS IN GREECE/ATHENS IF SOMEONE IS INTERESTED IN TAKING FULL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
There isn’t any physical theatre school in Greece right now that can provide a diploma. Only workshops and classes from professional actors and dancers.

WORKSHOPS' DESCRIPTION
My workshops are based upon researching the human motivation and truth. I use Jacques Lecoq’s techniques as a base, but each exercise in my workshops is carefully selected or created in order to easily lead the participants to the target, in a way that it is effortless, functional. Experiential and perfectly clear both for the body and the mind.

ARISTOTELIS MAGOULAS
I like research, it’s how I come around in life. I search for the unconventional forms of things and try to master everything I work on. I am a lonely person and choose very selectively the people I socialize with. I don’t give myself out. I’m a perfectionist, so I tend to make it hard for others to be around me. My only exit is theatre. I like watching all kinds of plays. I am not staunch in my own art of preference. As a person, I tend to have some whims, but this is what keeps my art alive.
