EXERCISES IN STYLE

VASSILIS GERONTAKOS  |  CAMERAWORK

"When I came in contact with the work of Henri Cartier Bresson –and inevitably– with his famous photo of the Saint Lazare station (which is of historical value), it was impossible to avoid the association with Raymond Queneau’s Exercises in Style, one of the most weird books ever written.
What would happen if another photographer was in Bressons position? And what if he was condemned to take the very same picture, of the same man, in the same station, during this same afternoon? And how could the decision of that click standalone as a photographic fact and not a patchwork of impressions with the homogenization of a particular style?
Having as an occasion a work "as life itself", which is in full swing without knowing the beginning or the end, how could he create his own project that would have nothing to do with what was happening right before his eyes, while keeping the curve of semblance?
Having these questions in mind, along with a research of the photographic means as the main request, and with the hope of not falling into the trap of the photographic event, 9 months ago we created a seminar which aimed to transform the style exercises into a blueprint for a future art project.
Besides, the Saint Lazare photo is the theater of this world".

The photographers presented in this exhibition, are almost walking the same path, meet almost the same people, and are almost subjected to the same wear.
But in between the ‘almost same’ to the ‘exactly the same’, lies a whole ocean that one should swim if he wants to create a deeply personal work of art from his own finger print.
