VASSILIS DIMAS  |  CAPOEIRA

IS
Capoeira began as a means of self-defense of the unarmed African slaves during the colonial period in Brazil. Disguising the fight into dance, they could practice it undisturbed before  the eyes of their masters. Thus acted as defense and cultural expression of enslaved people, then developed as a method of fitness of body and mind.

MAIN ASPECTS
In modern society Capoeira manifests as a cultural expression that involves fight, dance, music, improvisation, philosophy and sport.

THE ROLE OF MUSIC
Music is the common reference of players (capoeiristas), also affects the atmosphere, rhythm and plot of a game (jogo).

THE USE OF INSTRUMENTS
Instruments produce music that has interaction with the game proceeding at the time.

SONGS AND RYTHMS TO PLAY
There are some basic rhythms and a large number of song; the more one knows about them, the more detail and depth can put in his game.

IDEAS ABOUT
Capoeiristas are teammates (trying to communicate) and not rivals so this is a reason why there is not so much contact, aggression. A challenge is, to be able to support this thinking despite adversity. The repeatability encountered both in music (toques), and the songs and movement (ginga) is typical of the ritual origins of Capoeira. Any personal skill can be a useful tool, and the fact that every one of us has different skills can be really nice. One more capoeirista is the least you need in order to play.

FLOW
Rhythm – Rhythm – Rhythm

LEARNING HOW TO OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES
Myself’s weaknesses are reflected on my communication-my relation with the others (sorry folks!). The first thing in order to overcome it, is to understand this, then... love.

AS SELF-EXPRESSION
The variety of Capoeira components makes it an excellent means of expression, the difficulty now reduced to finding the purpose.

RESULT IN CONTEMPORARY LIFE 2013
The same as then: the release of what holds us captive, physically and spiritually...
