DELICATE IMAGERY OF DEER

DELICATE IMAGERY OF DEER
MARIA TRIALONI   |   VISUAL ARTIST

Her art is true to the basic impulse behind drawing as a means of recording the processes of perception, but it also captures the workings of the unconscious involved in dream formation. Incorporating disparate images from different sources, her drawings create a visual field in which the relations among images provide as powerful a thrill as their symbolic content. The drawings’ recurrent atmosphere is one that is feminine, even “girly” though not necessarily autobiographical.

The delicate imagery of deer presents a young female character exploring her blooming identity and sexuality, immersed in a very private and idiosyncratic world populated by obviously female and male genitals and plants, whether depicted in fragments or whole. Yet in what at first seems to be a dreamy, fairy‐tale setting, landscapes and flowers take a particular critical posture: The recurrent mood is bittersweet. The whole work reveals a handmade quality and above all, a sharp concern with composition.
